First, install Filemaker Pro according to its installation instructions. RaceBuilder is distributed as a compressed archive. Decompress it using a decompression utility like Stuffit Expander from Aladdin Systems. Then use the Installer to install the components you need. Use the Easy Install option when you install for the first time. Your computer does not need to be restarted after installation unless you custom install the enclosed font and libraries.

RaceBuilder comes in a folder together with this Read Me RaceBuilder file; a folder for your imported or exported race data; a documentation folder explaining RaceBuilders functionality together with a tutorial in HTML, TEXT, and PDF formats; the RaceBuilder Registration folder with the REGISTER applications allowing you to register RaceBuilder using your credit card via the web and via encrypted email; additional required databases; and fonts und libraries for your System folder. 3. Copyright
RaceBuilder is copyright 1999-2000 Dierk Seeburg. RaceBuilder is shareware and may be distributed only without changes to any of the files in the RaceBuilder installer and package.

4. Registration
We use the registration service Kagi run by Kee Nethery at admin@kagi.com. The big advantage for you is that you can pay the shareware fee with your credit card (VISA, MasterCard, Discovercard, Diners Club, Carte Blanche, and American Express) online or via FAX or Email. This also makes it easier for people in countries outside the U.S.A since currency conversions are handled automatically.

RaceBuilder has the following pricing.
1- 10 single user licenses, US$49 per user, US$39 for educational licenses
11+ single user licenses, US$39 per user
A Site License costs US$500 (roughly equal to 10 users) (US$400 for educational or quantity licenses) and covers all locations for your organization within a 160 kilometer radius of your site (100 miles). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software. A World-Wide License costs US$5000 (US$4000 for educational or quantity licenses) and it covers all locations for your organization on the planet earth.

ONLINE:
To register RaceBuilder online, use the Online Register Application included, open one of the Online Order files in the RaceBuilder Internet folder or go directly to <http://order.kagi.com/cgi-bin/register1.cgi?QUK> (secure ordering is available there), and follow the instructions at kagis web site.

OFFLINE:
To register RaceBuilder offline, fill out and print the registration form in the Registration folder and send it to the address indicated on it. This saves me the expense for the payment processing service.

Alternatively, open the Register program that accompanies RaceBuilder. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user or site or world-wide licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase. Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi. More specifics on the Register program to follow. Kagi handles the payment processing.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1-510-652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can Save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.

Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgment when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days, and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgment.

If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:

Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street #392-QUK
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA

You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical. If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.

Please do not fax or email payment forms that indicate Cash, Check or Invoice as the payment method. As far as we know, there is still no technology to transfer physical objects via fax or email and without the payment, the form cannot be processed. Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.

6. Protection
RaceBuilder has a protection scheme and when you pay, you will be informed how to indicate to RaceBuilder that you have paid the registration fee. If you do not have an email address, please enter your complete postal address and please remember, we do not know what country you live in so please enter that into the postal address also. If you do not have an email address you should consider selecting the Postcard Receipt so that Kagi can inform you of your registration code. Kagi transmits the registration codes via email and paid postcard receipt only.

For credit card payments, send the form via Email to <sales@kagi.com> or by FAX to +1-510-652-6589. Checks should be made out to Kagi and should be in US dollars.

You can also register on the Web, using Kagi's Online Order Process system. Go to the Registration page at <http://order.kagi.com/cgi-bin/register1.cgi?QUK>

All comments about the program should be sent direct to me via Email to Dierk.Seeburg@kagi.com. Please always include an Email address to which we can send your registration code.

8. Compatibility Issues
Following are excerpts from the documentation for Filemaker Pro:

2. CONVERSION ISSUES
2.1 Using Filemaker Pro 3.0 Databases

Filemaker Pro 4.0 uses the same database format as Filemaker Pro 3.0. However, ScriptMaker scripts that use features not available in Filemaker Pro 3.0, such as the Open URL script step, GIF/JPEG support, and the Send Mail script step, may not function correctly if used on a computer running Filemaker Pro 3.0.

2.3 Files That Have Been Tampered With

Filemaker Pro 4.0 will convert files in the Filemaker Pro 1.x and 2.x formats. However, we do not support conversion of files that have been improperly tampered with. For example, Filemaker Pro files modified using password tampering software may not properly convert to the 4.0 format.

2.4 Problems During Conversion

If you experience problems converting a file, try recovering the file first. Recover the file in your previous version of Filemaker Pro. Then, use Filemaker Pro 4.0 to convert the recovered version of the file.

2.5 Indexing

In Filemaker Pro 4.0, fields are not indexed as part of the conversion process from Filemaker Pro 1.x and 2.x files. Filemaker Pro 4.0 will create an index for a field the first time it is needed, and then subsequently keep it up-to-date. For example, an index will be created the first time you use Find to search for data in a field. We recommend that you let FileMaker decide when to build the index. This process will happen without any special action on your part. However, since you may experience a short delay while the index for a field is being built, you may want to index certain fields in advance. An easy way to do so is to create a Find request on fields you want indexed and perform the Find. Once a field is indexed, the index is automatically maintained by Filemaker Pro. For details and more indexing options, see "Indexing Fields" in Chapter 2 of the Filemaker Pro User's Guide.
